Reading: In reading we will be working on how to dtermine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details in order to summarize the text.We have finished fiction stories for the time being, and are working on informational texts.
Writing: In writing we are working on opinion writing. This week the students will be picking their own opinion topic to write a 3+ paragraph piece on.
The students will be graded on having Brilliant Beginnings, Mighty Middles, and Excellent Endings. The rubric also includes conventions, spelling, and the use of multiple transition words. All of this we have discussed in class and the students have the rubric as well to check off each of these items.

Math: We will be finishing up on in chapter 2 of Math in Focus this week that covers estimation and number theory. Some of the skills your child will practice are:
• estimating, and choosing between an estimate and an exact answer
• finding common factors and common multiples
• identifying prime numbers and composite numbers
Once we have finished Chapter 2 we will be moving on to Chapter 3, Whole Number Multiplication and Division. We will be exploring ways to multiply using arrays and area models. In division, we discovering how to use division to sole real world problems with regrouping.
Science: Starting Monday we will begin the process in conducting individual class experiments based on the Orange flyer that was sent home in preparation. Monday we will determine the question and purpose of our experiments, Tuesday we will create the hypothesis that will be used, Wednesday is the experiment!, Thursday will be used to document and write conclusions based on the experiment, and finally on Friday we will begin putting together our Scientific Posters in order to present on the following Wednesday.
